> Language flexibility doesn't obscure the readability of code. I don't find it shocking, I think it's a sign of immaturity. > If you find that shocking you would probably drop dead at seeing what Lisp programmers get up to with macros :) Make new empty object, stuff with properties of all argument objects, season to taste, return. But if objects are effectively just bags of properties (a.k.a. Oh, and one problem with this prototype business is that in fact it is single inheritance (in the typical incarnations, at least am I invoking a strawman)? It seems inescapable that supporting multiple inheritance under the prototype paradigm requires that we make a single new object out of two or more existing objects. (That is also designed that way in order to pander to implementation ease and certain run-time efficiencies but has been turned into fallacious arguments like "multiple inheritance is bad. Java has single inheritance, which sucks but it has multiple inheritance of interfaces at least, and good luck doing any serious work in Java without that being involved. By inheriting from foo, I'm enforcing the decision that this cannot be a bar, which could cause a problem to a future maintainer (maybe myself in six months). It bugs me even if there is no plan to do that in the current program. Like, okay, we got the properties of foo so that means we now absolutely cannot be a bar. I hate being locked to single inheritance. I still like its expressiveness and power, but if it becomes another C++ in future, I have to look somewhere else. When I look at the amount of features added to the language specification, sometimes it seems like it is going to become another incarnation of the C++ specification. (The most famous of these might be typeof null = "object") Still, there are some (many?) edge/corner cases and unfixable bugs (aka features) that the language is stuck with for the sake of backwards compatibility and developers have to learn these. you have great metaprogramming capabilities that make this language much powerful. Then I learnt that prototypal inheritance is a superset of ''class''ical inheritance as well as this. The prototypal inheritence and 'this' were confusing to me and took much time to understand those. JavaScript is very expressive and powerful language. Just another side of the coin, I suppose. I don't think that just those really give you the full picture that you need though if you actually want to build professional web applications. Obviously, the React and Redux documentation have been great as well. Eloquent Javascript 3rd Edition - Book being discussed, really enjoying working through it. Mozilla HTML Reference - Can't get any better than this documentationĤ. Learn CSS Layout - A nice write up for understanding what CSS actually is doingģ. Fullstack React: The Complete Guide - a wonderful book with a bunch of practical applications to buildĢ. I've been working through the following resources with a decent amount of success I think:ġ. I'm still learning, but I've found that just the official documentation doesn't quite get you there if you want to get the full picture. With little javascript/html/css knowledge, I used a couple different resources. But just from my perspective, I've been a backend engineer for most of my professional career and wanted to pick up front end dev. I also have a bit more time now that I'm stuck at home on evenings and weekends. I'm not competing with the experts out there, I just want to learn new skills and build things that I couldn't before. It's very likely that I won't finish everything on my list this month, due to other obligations, but that's ok. I have experience with Javascript and VueJS from a couple of years ago, so my goal is to catch up with modern JS (ES6+), brush up my JS core knowledge (not just frameworks) and learn ReactJS. Learning new languages, frameworks and building side projects helps me through the low periods and enables me to work more fluently with developers. My measure of success is being able to understand development at a lower-level. I just break my learning goals down into small, manageable tasks and revise as needed. I'm not a 10x developer, so I don't measure myself against 10x tech bloggers or other "experts". It just depends on how you look at things and how you measure success. I get burned out at work multiple times each year (I do mostly technical writing, training, and support). Definitely don't get down on yourself-going through periods of low- and high-productivity is normal. After that, click on the ' Shapes' option. My frustration is that this is the lazy way out. What can we actually do? Pay, or lose access. For those that already bought in, features that we already paid for are being taken away. My frustration is that this is retro-active. My frustration isn’t the $2/month ($17.99/year) fee. In this case, the company can decide to start charging a fee for something that was normally bundled with my original purchase price, and I have no recourse. We can get comfortable using them and when the server owners decide they no longer want to support, they can just pull the plug and we are left without any recourse. This is a big concern whenever we purchase devices that are controlled using someone else’s servers (or what people call, The Cloud). Why? According to the FAQ that was in the email, they say: Why is Skydrop now needing to charge a monthly fee? The very reason to have a smart controller is now being taken away. Reading through the email, the folks at Skydrop are essentially saying that they can no longer afford to let me use the app to control my sprinkler controller. The email proceeded to tell me, very professionally, that I now must pay a monthly fee for what I’ve already paid for when purchasing my controller. The title was “Introducing Skydrop Plus”. Again, this should all come from the Matter community, but Apple can certainly help fund some of it.A few days ago, I received an email from Skydrop, my smart sprinkler controller, that I almost glossed over. App Store issues, sure.Īnother area that can jump start adoption of new standards like Matter is the development of toolkits that include reference and sample implementations of the most common functional implementations for both client and server side, testing guidance, protocol sniffers, tracing/logging tools, verification tools, conformance requirements, etc. Third parties shouldn’t need to be knocking on Apple’s lab doors to deal with Swift issues. This is really no different than how Apple handles the relationship between Swift, which is an open standard, and Apple’s app and platform level integration and ecosystem. Apple will still retain total control over HomeKit and offer significant third part opportunities, but the technical basis for connectivity and integration should be around Matter. Again the goal is to form a broad knowledge base around the Matter standard rather than just HomeKit. These types of investments can occur across the academic spectrum, from trade schools and vocational programs up through college and graduate levels. Part of this heavy lifting should include forming and at least partially funding alliances with academic institutions to promote Matter within that community, both on the technology side as well as the conformance side. Ideally the primary technical challenges for HomeKit adopters should be delegated to Matter experts rather than to Apple. To improve HomeKit adoption Apple really needs to go all-in on Matter even if it means they are doing some of the heavy lifting that could be delegated to others and are being careful not to impose too much proprietary influence over smaller adopters. In my opinion the future success of HomeKit hinges on how well Apple and other vendors support the Matter standard. This is an unfortunate scenario but hopefully an isolated one. Golden Gate with Fort Point in foreground, c. Experts said that ferocious winds and blinding fogs would prevent construction and operation. Many experts said that a bridge could not be built across the 6,700-foot (2,000-metre) strait, which had strong, swirling tides and currents, with water 372 ft (113 m) deep at the center of the channel, and frequent strong winds. Because it did not have a permanent link with communities around the bay, the city's growth rate was below the national average. San Francisco was the largest American city still served primarily by ferry boats. Many wanted to build a bridge to connect San Francisco to Marin County. The trip from the San Francisco Ferry Building took 27 minutes. The ferry crossing between the Hyde Street Pier in San Francisco and Sausalito Ferry Terminal in Marin County took approximately 20 minutes and cost $1.00 per vehicle, a price later reduced to compete with the new bridge. Once for railroad passengers and customers only, Southern Pacific's automobile ferries became very profitable and important to the regional economy. The Sausalito Land and Ferry Company service, launched in 1867, eventually became the Golden Gate Ferry Company, a Southern Pacific Railroad subsidiary, the largest ferry operation in the world by the late 1920s. A ferry service began as early as 1820, with a regularly scheduled service beginning in the 1840s for the purpose of transporting water to San Francisco. History Ferry service įurther information: Ferries of San Francisco Bayīefore the bridge was built, the only practical short route between San Francisco and what is now Marin County was by boat across a section of San Francisco Bay. Its main span is 4,200 feet (1,280 m) and total height is 746 feet (227 m). The Golden Gate Bridge is described in Frommer's travel guide as "possibly the most beautiful, certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world." At the time of its opening in 1937, it was both the longest and the tallest suspension bridge in the world, titles it held until 19 respectively. The bridge opened to the public in 1937 and has undergone various retrofits and other improvement projects in the decades since. Joseph Strauss served as chief engineer for the project, with Leon Moisseiff, Irving Morrow and Charles Ellis making significant contributions to its design. The idea of a fixed link between San Francisco and Marin had gained increasing popularity during the late 19th century, but it was not until the early 20th century that such a link became feasible. Recognized by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of the Wonders of the Modern World, the bridge is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco and California. It also carries pedestrian and bicycle traffic, and is designated as part of U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1 across the strait. city of San Francisco, California-the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula-to Marin County, carrying both U.S. The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the one-mile-wide (1.6 km) strait connecting San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Setting width:100% for the background div ensures it’ll take up the width of the page – but you could position it differently if needed. Here’s the required css: #background_cycler Simply include the plugin, declare your markup, and Cycle2 does the rest. It supports a declarative initialization style that allows full customization without any scripting. $('#background_cycler').hide() //hide the background while the images load, ready to fade in later Cycle2 is a versatile slideshow plugin for jQuery built around ease-of-use. I started my html by including the background div: If the user has javascript disabled then just the initial image is displayed as a background – which is a “graceful degradation” I think. The buttons below are wired up to call the start and stop instance methods. Use any CSS and HTML to style the text and create a slideshow design exactly how you want. It works using html & javascript, so if you wanted to, you could run this in your. As you can see in our demo each image of the slideshow changes. I’m hiding the background div as soon as it’s created, and then fading it back in once all the images are loaded to avoid any jerky transitions. The cycleSettings state property is set to the themes defined by the module, so each new image shows with a different JavaScript animation transition effect. This script is a browser source, while the one in OBS is not. The code is virtually the same as the crossfade cycler. but of course we dont want just plain html like 1999, we have resources as html5, css3. Product Category that slider images will be displayed from The number of products the slider will show in 1 full cycle (repeating) Select the Image. However, by setting up a div to act as a background, and cycling the images within that div, I found the effect of cycling the background can be achieved quite simply. Repeat after me: Image sliders and carousels kill conversions. Preview Carousel Slider A slider that displays groups of images at once, rather than one-by-one. Preview Before & After Alt An alternate version of the Before & After widget with more extensive options. For Custom builds, the resulting objects are whatever the builder image author has. Now, cycling the background image on an element I think would be very messy indeed, among other reasons because only one background image is widely supported. This widget offers a simple and effective way to show two images in the same frame. For Docker and S2I builds, the resulting objects are runnable images. I had a question last week about whether my crossfade cycler could instead cycle a background image. It's not an experience padded with multiple cities or the obligatory "slow living" town at the outskirts of the world map. GTA Online Weekly Update: 30th March, 2023 New PS5, PS4 Games This Week (27th March to 2nd April) Sorry if this was like I was being the "Um actually" guy I just wanted to shine some light on things to make you know the reason behind things like Cyberpunks mess and why people still say stupid things like GTA Clone don't know what they're talking about. Rockstar also removed it's interesting combat mechanics and a lot of detail from V. Yes, GTA 4 was way too ahead for it's time apparently and rockstar completely removed it for the sequel. Sleeping Dogs also had eating food at food stalls and before you say "But GTA 4." Blah blah. Bully was actually the closest now that I think about it. The closest game is GTA 4 or RDR 2, Rockstar isn't good at making open world games with good hand to hand combat and all the games they did make with fighting mechanics were totally arcade games. Sleeping Dogs has many technical achievements over GTA 5 like the martial arts in an open world. Cyberpunk was just a sad example to anyone not to show off a game you don't have in 2011 then make deal with sony or whoever and get an impossible deadline to fix it while showing off so many things that make it better than what it actually is. So far, I can only remember a few glitches and there is a smartphone in Sleeping Dogs as well. If another Call Of Duty came out today, would you call it a "Doom Clone"? Why not? It shares the exact same things that make up Dooms formula so why not? Good art is hard to explain an example of but I think the best would be that good art isn't a copy so much as an alteration of reality or whatever the object of the painting/drawing/sculpting (you get the picture) is. Mon 15th Aug I never agreed with "GTA Clone" and frankly, that term was outdated when Sleeping Dogs came out. And, if you never got around to actually playing Sleeping Dogs, it's worth noting that Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition exists on PS4 - a rather barebones remaster, but still great fun. We wrote this article so that we could all remember the fun times we had with Wei Shen on his campaign of skull-cracking justice. It's always felt like a sequel could have really taken the title's formula to the next level.īut we don't want to get bogged down in sequel-less despair, here. A massive shame, given the game's fairly unique blend of police drama, bare-knuckle brawling, and often chaotic sandbox design. Naturally, fans have always wanted a sequel - but it hasn't happened, and at this point, it might never happen. Whether it was through positive word of mouth or because of comparisons to open world blockbusters like Grand Theft Auto - or a bit of both - the martial arts-infused adventure ended up resonating with a lot of people. At the time, Sleeping Dogs didn't set the world alight with rave review scores or super high sales figures, but it did gain significant traction over the years that followed. Sleeping Dogs just turned ten years old! The sandbox title first launched for the PS3 on the 14th August 2012, and it's safe to say that it's fondly remembered. |
